ABS-CBN on Friday defended one of its top talents, Liza Soberano, after she was called out by an Army general for speaking at women's party Gabriela's youth forum.
Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade warned Soberano to be careful with her dealings with women's group Gabriela, or else she'll suffer the "same fate of those killed." Fellow actress Angel Locsin came to Soberano's defense.
"Liza Soberano is an advocate of women's rights and supports initiatives that protect and promote women's interests," the network said. "It is our hope that people may be allowed to freely participate in meaningful and rational discussion of issues without having to be red-tagged."
Soberano spoke at a Gabriela youth forum on gender-based violence.
ABS-CBN said Soberano's views on women's rights "is her own voice and not of any person or group."
"ABS-CBN and Star Magic stand by Liza Soberano as she speaks out against violations of women's rights," it said.
