Three provinces surrouding Metro Manila will be placed under COVID-19 Alert Level 3, Malacañang said Tuesday following an increase in infections in the country.

Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal will be under the third highest quarantine classification from Jan. 5-15, Cabinet Sec. Karlo Nograles said citing "a sharp increase of COVID-19 cases in the particular localities."

Metro Manila was upgraded to Alert Level 3 on Monday after infections increased in the days following Christmas. A total of 4,084 new COVID-19 cases were reported by the Philippines on Monday.

Health authorities have warned of a "high possibility" of local transmission of the more contagious Omicron variant and an "exponential rise" in COVID-19 cases.
