Auring Weakens Slightly on Approach to Mindanao
Tropical storm Auring (Dujuan) weakened slightly ahead of its landfall in Mindanao's Caraga Region early Sunday, weather bureau PAGASA said. However, the threat of heavy rains and floods remains.
At 4 a.m. Saturday, Auring was spotted 475 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 kph with 90 kph gusts. It could further weaken to a tropical depression before it hits land, PAGASA said.
The storm could weaken further upon impact as the landfall area is mountainous, it said. Cold winds are also blowing from the northeast, which could temper Auring's winds that draw power from warm air.
After landfall in Caraga on Sunday morning, Auring is expected to cross the Visayas and Mimaropa through Monday.
