Auring to Strengthen Before Landfall, Heavy Rains Expected

Auring, the Philippines' first cyclone of 2021, is expected to intensify into a tropical storm before it slams into northeastern Mindanao over the weekend, bringing heavy rains to the region and surrounding areas, authorities said.

At 10 p.m. Wednesday, Auring was spotted 755 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph with 70 kph gusts.

When will Auring make landfall?

Saturday evening or early Sunday in the Caraga region, according to PAGASA. By that time, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal no. 1 could be in place in some areas.

What are the hazards?

Auring could bring heavy to intense rains, putting 4,654 barangays in Bicol, Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao and Caraga at risk from landslides and floods, according to the NDRRMC.

Where are the rains expected?

According to the NDRRMC, Caraga and Davao Oriental will experience moderate to heavy rains while Eastern and Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and the rest of Davao region will experience light to moderate with at times heavy rains on Saturday.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains will be felt over Surigao provinces, Dinagat islands, Eastern Visayas, Masbate, and the northern portion of Cebu on Saturday evening through Sunday.

Moderate to heavy rains will be experienced in Sorsogon, Albay, Catanduanes, and Marinduque while light to moderate with at times heavy rains over CALABARZON, Northern Mindanao, Davao region, and the rest of Bicol region, Visayas, and Caraga.
