Dante is First of Up to Four Storms in June as Wet Season Approaches
(UPDATE) Up to three more tropical storms will follow Dante (Choi-Wan) this June, as the Philippines transitions to the wet season from summer, PAGASA said Thursday.
The fourth storm of 2021 will continue to cool Luzon with rains as another low pressure area entered the Philippine area of responsibility, PAGASA said. The new weather system is unlikely to intensify into a tropical storm.
At 10 a.m., Dante was spotted 190 km west southwest of Sinait, Ilocos Sur with maximum sustained winds of up to 65 kph and gusts of up to 90 kph. The low pressure area was spotted east of Southern Luzon.
A low pressure area or LPA becomes a typhoon when there is enough air circulation in the middle to form an eye.
Dante doesn't signal yet the start of the rainy season, which is expected by mid-June, weather forecaster Grace Castaneda told reportr. PAGASA expects one to three more storms to enter the Philippines this month.
"'Yung init po na nararanasan ngayon pong June ay maaari na pong mabawasan dahil tag-ulan na sa susunod na araw," she said.
Dante is forecast to weaken into a tropical depression this Friday, PAGASA said.
