Motorists who are driving alone in their vehicles can skip the face mask rule, authorities said Friday, clarifying the implementation of the COVID-19 precautionary measure.

Drivers can remove their face masks when traveling alone, the Department of Health and Department of Transportation said in a joint statement.

The face mask rule only applies if a driver is traveling with passengers--meaning everyone in the vehicle needs to wear a face mask regardless if they are from the same household.

Fines and penalties for violators will be discussed by transportation regulators, the DOTr and DOH said.

Most parts of the Philippines are under eased quarantine restrictions--either general community quarantine or modified general community quarantine--allowing for greater mobility.
