Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake Rocks Davao Oriental

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake of tectonic origin with a depth of 177km hit the waters southeast of Davao Oriental earlier today at 4:50pm.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS), the earthquake was reported as intensity III in Kiamba and Glan, Sarangani. Intensity II, meanwhile, was reported in General Santos City and in Tupi, T'boli and Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. Zamboanga City was reported as intensity I.

Its instrumental intensity was recorded as intensity III in Kiamba and Malungon, Sarangani, and intensity II in  Alabel, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato; General Santos City, and Koronodal City. Instrumental Intensity in Zamboanga City was recorded as Intensity I.

No tsunami warning was raised, and no damage was expected by the agency following the earthquake. PHILVOLCS did, however, report that aftershocks are expected.
