FEU Cheering Squad Reigns in Abridged UAAP Cheerdance Competition
The Far Eastern University Cheering Squad on Sunday emerged as the new champion of the UAAP Cheerdance Competition, the first to be staged since the collegiate sports fest was paused for two years due to the pandemic.
The squad in green, yellow, and black bagged its first UAAP CDC win since 2009 and third overall, beating defending champs National University Pep Squad which was gunning for their second three-peat and seventh championship.
The team from Morayta wowed the crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena with their Queen-themed performance, featuring music by the legendary British rock band including "Another One Bites the Dust", "Under Pressure", and "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Adamson Pep Squad, with a cowboy-inspired routine, was first runner-up, while the NU Pep Squad, who performed in 90s throwback tunes, placed second runner-up.
This year's UAAP CDC implemented several rule changes to ensure the health and safety of the participants, removing live drums and limiting the duration of the performances to up to three minutes only.
Only up to 15 persons were also allowed to perform per team, as against the previous editions' 25-member teams. The group stunts category was also removed in this year's competition.
