Commuters who ride the MRT-3 need to pay for their train trips starting Friday, July 1, as the Department of Transportation ended its 'libreng sakay' program.

The program, which ran from March 28 until June 30 or the end of Rodrigo Duterte's presidency, benefitted some 28 million commuters according to the transportation department.

Originally intended to run for a month, the program was extended twice to help Filipinos cope with soaring fuel prices and commodities.

The DOTr added that there was no train unloading incident reported for the duration of the free rides program.

The government completed the rehabilitation of the MRT-3 in December last year which the DOTr said was brought about by the increasing number of commuters.
