Sen. Panfilo Lacson and Senate President Vicente Sotto III said Monday they agreed to postpone the official launch of their 2022 elections bid as the country faces the threat of the highly contagious Delta coronavirus variant.

The tandem's launch event was originally set for Aug. 4, but Sotto said they thought it best to "focus more on attending to our people’s health concerns and priorities than any other non-health related activities."

"It is a purely sensitivity issue, even considering that the event will be virtually presented," he told reporters.

Sotto said they will soon announce the new date for their launch event, which could take place after the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila is lifted. He added that they are looking into holding it on Sept. 8.

The capital region will be placed under ECQ, the strictest of the four-step community quarantine classifications, from Aug. 6 to 20 to curb the spread of the Delta variant.
