Manila Golf and Country Club Shut Indefinitely Due to COVID

The Manila Golf and Country Club in Makati City said it was closing Friday until further notice after at least eight staffers were confirmed to have COVID-19.

The COVID cases include one waiter, six food preparation staff and one roving snack cart waiter. "This is a matter of concern as several other employees have yet to be tested," management said.

All employees and contractual personnel will be tested while the club's premises will be disinfected during the closure, it said.

"The Board will continue to monitor developments and will take the necessary precautions to safeguard the health and well-being of all our members, employees, their families and the neighboring community," it said.

The Manila Golf closure underscores the severity of the COVID surge in Metro Manila, which is projected to surpass the peak of infections in 2020 unless authorities move to cap it.

Local lockdowns in at least two cities in Metro Manila and a region-wide curfew could halve the rise in COVID-19 infections by the end of March, OCTA Research Group said, describing the outbreak in the capital region of 12 million people as "serious."

By the end of the month, there could be 4,000 new cases per day compared to 7,500 if new restrictions were not put in place. The OCTA projection cited lockdowns in Pasay and Navotas. The city of Manila had also placed several barangays under lockdown.
