Meralco to Hike Power Rates as Fuel Prices Jump
Power distributor Meralco said Friday it would increase power rates for the month of June as Filipinos struggle with soaring fuel prices.
A P0.3982 increase per kilowatt-hour will be implemented for June, Meralco said. This means that a typical household consuming 200 kWh could see an increase of around P80 in the total bill.
The price hike comes after Meralco decreased its rates in May.
Meralco said the increase is due to higher generation charges or the cost of buying electricity mainly due to higher fuel costs.
The Department of Energy earlier this week said fuel prices are expected to keep rising in June citing higher global demand and the persistent war in Ukraine.
This week alone, diesel prices increased by P6.55 per liter while gasoline prices hiked by P2.70 per liter.
Filipinos were advised to take advantage of promo programs too.
