The number coding scheme in Metro Manilla will be reimposed starting Wednesday, Dec. 1, the MMDA said in a bid to ease traffic congestion especially during the holiday rush.

The restrictions will cover private vehicles only and will be implemented from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Mondays to Fridays except for holidays, MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos said.

"The problem primarily is during rush hours in the afternoon so ang gagawin na lang namin ililimit na lamang namin sa oras na ito," Abalos told reporters.

Public transport vehicles including ride-hailing services such as Grab, tricycles, garbage trucks, fuel trucks, and trucks transporting essential goods are exempted from the policy according to Abalos.

For nearly the whole day, light trucks are prohibited from traversing EDSA--between Magallanes in Makati City and North Avenue in Quezon City--from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, Abalos said.

Light trucks are defined as motor vehicles with a gross capacity of 4,500 kilograms or below and/or with six or more tires, with either enclosed or open payload area.
