Local government executives and the public should be wary of con-men posing as officials of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and supposedly arranging for COVID-19 relief, the agency said Wednesday.

The DILG, which oversees local government units, has received reports that some provincial governments were receiving calls and texts from scammers pretending to be senior officials of the agency, said Usec. Jonathan Malaya.

The impostors, according to Malaya, offer to provide COVID-19 aid in exchange for money.

Among local government officials who received such calls were Tuburan, Cebu Mayor Danilo Diamante; Lopez, Quezon Mayor Rachel Ubana; Estancia, Iloilo Mayor Melina Requinto; Maasin City Mayor Nacional Mercado.

The DILG has informed the police of the scam, Malaya said.
