Trucks will be prohibited at the Skyway Stage 3 starting next week, with roads dedicated solely to RFID Class 1 vehicles, San Miguel Corp said Wednesday.

The elevated expressway will collect toll starting July 12 after operating for free to the public for almost seven months. Total foregone revenues since late December 2020 is close to P3 billion, SMC said.

Only motorists on private vehicles with Autosweep RFID stickers will be allowed to pass, a move that would address safety concerns on the elevated expressway and limit the spread of COVID-19, San Miguel President Ramon Ang said.

“We have implemented a number of measures to ensure safety, prevent over-speeding, and facilitate the more efficient flow of vehicles while still providing motorists significantly reduced travel times,” Ang said.

“With more private vehicles diverted to Skyway 3, our public roads will be freed up and decongested. This will benefit, number one, our public transportation and commuters. It will also be beneficial to transporters of goods, who can opt to use the at-grade sections of the Skyway system where tolls are lower, as well as public roads which are free, as they are subsidized by government,” he added.

Motorists who opt to use public roads are expected to see less congested roads as the Skyway 3 is seen to divert and handle 200,000 vehicles daily—about half of EDSA's daily traffic volume.

Those without RFID tags can have them installed at toll gates on the spot for free, with a minimum load requirement of P300 that can be used immediately.
