Restaurants Protest TikTok Duo's Viral Japanese Spice Prank

Restaurant owners on Tuesday called out a TikTok duo over a video that showed them taking home multiple servings of togarashi or Japanese spice from a restaurant.

Chuck and Joe, who have 266,000 followers, posted the video as part of the prank trend "Nobody's Gonna Know." One of two kept on asking for togarashi from the server and everytime it was given, he transferred the spice to a jar. They took the jar home.

The duo apologized in a separate TikTok post saying they never took home what was not given and it would be a pity to just throw away the spice had they left it on the table. It was "humor" that some people didn't get. They sought understanding if the joke was unclear.

RestoPH called on the duo and TikTok to take the video down. It's bad timing since the industry is struggling during the pandemic, the group said.

"Our members have expressed outrage and disappointment over this video, which may encourage others, especially impressionable youth, to emulate the prank," RestoPh said on Facebook.

"Restaurant losses are not casual matters to be used for a 'Social Experiment'," the group said. "We are hopeful of the public’s support, as these kinds of acts should not be emulated for virality and 'comedy'."
