"Mama Mary" was trending on Monday after netizens flagged a tarpaulin greeting the Catholic faithful for the Feast of the Nativity showing the mother of Jesus Christ flanked by four politicians.
One of the most popular tweets was from Father Fiel Pareja, who has two million followers of TikTok. "I am speechless?" Pareja said, adding in a follow-up post. "Again, why?"
The tarp, put up two days before the Sept. 8 Catholic feast, showed four Malabon officials -- Coun. Enzo Oreta, Mayor Lenlen Oreta, Cong. Jaye Lacson-Noel, and Vice Mayor Ninong dela Cruz -- flashing a common hand sign while the Blessed Virgin's photo was faded behind the text greeting.
Netizens said it was a "trapo" move that should be taken down as respect to the Virgin Mother.
"The nerve of these politicians! Mahihiya si satanas"
"Grabe pamumulitika! Pati feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary ginagamit just so they can have their names and faces posted!"
"Hahaha tapos actual image ni Mama Mary almost watermark na lang"
"Hiyang hiya naman ako kay BLESSED VIRGIN MARY kulang na lang di maaninag."
We reached out to the politicians in the poster but they have not replied as of early afternoon Monday.
