Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Thursday offered her sympathies over the passing of her successor, former President Benigno Aquino III, as she remembered the Aquino family's legacy to the country.
"My family and I join the Filipino people in prayers and sympathy on the passing of former President Benigno Aquino III," Arroyo said in a statement after news of Aquino's passing broke out.
"Aside from his own achievements, he will be remembered as part of the Aquino family that has contributed three important people to the history of our nation, Senator Ninoy Aquino and our 11th and 15th presidents, Cory and Noynoy Aquino," she added.
Aquino succeeded Arroyo in the country's highest government position in 2010.
In 2007, Aquino joined the senatorial race under the Genuine Opposition coalition running against the administration-backed candidates of Arroyo. He eventually won a seat in the Senate and served as a member of the minority bloc.
