Instead of criticizing him for distributing aid in cash and kind, presidential aspirant Manny Pacquiao on Monday urged his rivals to share their wealth to poor Filipinos who are mired in poverty because of corruption in government.

Pacquiao started an "ayuda challenge" because he said politicians seemed to notice their constitutents only during the election season.

"Ipamahagi naman nila kahit kaunti ang kanilang mga kayamanan. Maganda siguro magkaroon tayo ng ayuda challenge para sa lahat tumatakbo para makinabang naman ang mga Pilipino,” he said in a statement.

Pacquiao has been accused of vote buying, but the senator said he had been doing it since his boxing heyday, long before he became a politician.

The senator said no public funds were used in his relief activities, as these all came from his own pocket.

"At least maganda naman po yan dahil namimigay ako at hindi nagnanakaw,” he added.

The Commission on Elections earlier said that election laws, including the prohibition on vote buying, would only apply to aspirants of elective posts once they are declared official candidates and the campaign period has begun.

The official list of candidates will be released by December, and the campaign period for national candidates will begin on Feb. 8, 2022.

Pacquiao said he would only stop giving relief and cash aid when it is prohibited by law.
