President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Monday said some 30 million National ID cards will be issued by the end of 2022 as he delivered his first State of the Nation Address.
Citing the importance of digital transformation, Marcos Jr. said the National ID would play an important role in public transactions given the "exponential adoption of technology."
"The National ID will play an important part in this digital transformation. For citizens to be able to seamlessly transact with government, their identity must be easily verifiable," Marcos Jr. said.
An additional 20 million digital versions of the National ID are expected to be issued by the end of 2022, Marcos Jr. said. By mid-2023, Marcos Jr. said the government aims to issue 92 million National IDs.

Through the National ID, Filipinos are given a valid proof of identity that contains both basic information and added security functions such as biometrics.
Also known as the PhilID, the card will serve as sufficient proof of identity and age for all government and private transactions as ordered by former President Rodrigo Duterte. Getting a National ID will make government transactions easier such as for applications for social welfare programs, passport applications, and other government-issued IDs.
