The Commission on Higher Education said Wednesday it was studying the possible expansion of limited face-to-face classes to other degree programs aside from medical and health-related courses.

Guidelines for the possible expansion of limited in-person classes are already being formulated, said CHED Chairman Prospero de Vera III, noting that some may need to retrofit their facilities to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols.

"Kung makikita sa datos na talagang ligtas ang mga bata dahil sa compliance sa guidelines, ang aking gagawin ay pupunta ako kay Presidente Duterte at hihingan ng approval na i-expand ito sa iba pang degree program na kailangan din ng face-to-face," he said in a briefing.

At least 73 schools have been inspected by CHED and the government's inter-agency task force on pandemic response on protocols for COVID-19 safety. So far, limited face-to-face classes in college are allowed only for medical and health-related programs.

De Vera said school officials needed to limit face-to-face classes to subjects that cannot be done online.

"...Ang critical dito ay mapili kung ano iyong mga subject na talagang hindi puwedeng gawing virtual o online," he said.

The Philippines last year had to adopt online learning as the main platform for education as the COVID-19 pandemic prohibited the conduct of in-person classes due to the risks posed by the disease.
