COVID Cases are Rising in Cebu, DOH Explains Why

The spike in COVID-19 cases in Cebu City and Cebu province are due to aggressive contact-tracing and testing after the Christmas holidays, the Department of Health said, adding health systems are far from overwhelmed by the jump.

The increase is "very far (malayong malayo)" from the surge in infections in the middle of 2020, said Mary Jean Loreche, spokesperson and chief pathologist of Department of Health - Central Visayas.

"Sobrang safe po tayo ngayon. Although this data is reflective of what's happening here, we want to make sure that people are not complacent," she said.

As of Jan. 28, there are 1,150 active cases in Cebu City and 614 in Cebu province. Of the total, 88% in Cebu City are asymptomatic compared to 98.5% in the province, she said.

Critical care utilization is at 25.1% meaning 225 patients are occupying 672 hospital beds alloted for patients needing critical care, she said.

"During the holiday season, busy ang mga tao... all the cases we are seeing is reflective of the people movement. We are seeing, ilang linggo na ito," he said.

"This only goes to show na ang ating testing cap and active contact tracing is in place," she said.
