Those with the national ID may use it as proof of identity when applying for a passport, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday.
“Kasunod ito ng paghimok ng Philippine Statistics Authority sa mga ahensya ng gobyerno at pribadong sektor na tanggapin ang PhilID sa mga transaksyon, alinsunod sa Republic Act No. 11055 o ang Philippine Identification System Act,” the Philippine Statistics Authority said in an advisory.
The PhilSys ID, or the Philippine Identification System ID, is a super-ID that contains basic information such as name and birthday, strengthened by special security features like fingerprints and iris scans.
With the PhilSys ID, the aim is for Filipinos to present only one ID instead of the usual two or three when opening bank accounts, availing loans, or proving their identity. An actual plastic card is issued, but the unique PhilSys Number or PSN can also be used as proof of identity in transactions.
Application is completely free and has three steps; online registration, capturing of biometrics at registration centers, and delivery of card.
