The first COVID-19 vaccine shot was administered in the Philippines on Monday, roughly a year since the pandemic left some 12,000 people killed in the country and triggered a nationwide quarantine that sank the economy into the worst recession since World War II.

The first vaccine dose was given to Dr. Gerardo Legaspi, the Philippine General Hospital Director. Nurse Chareluck Santos delivered the dose.

The Sinovac jabs, a donation from China, were distributed to government hospitals in Metro Manila after President Rodrigo Duterte received them at Villamor Airbase on Sunday.

The ceremonial innoculation on Monday will precede a nationwide rollout that will prioritize pandemic frontliners.
