Manila Hospital Closes ER After Suspected Meningococcemia Death

The city government of Manila said Monday it was temporarily closing the emergency room of one of its hospitals for disinfection following the death of a suspected Meningococcemia case.

Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center's ER will be closed until 8 a.m., Tuesday, according to the Manila Public Information Office.

"This is to make way for the ER's terminal cleaning and disinfection due to a suspected Meningococcemia case who died earlier in the said area," it said.

Meningococcemia is a rare infectious disease that could be life-threatening without proper medical care.

The disease is spread person-to-person through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions from coughing, kissing, or sharing of utensils.

The Department of Health previously said the disease does not spread as easily as common colds since the bacteria that causes it cannot survive outside of the human host.
