The iPhone 14 series is due out in the fourth quarter and for the the first time, Apple is offering a cheaper, non-pro version of the Max version that has the biggest screen size, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The iPhone 14 series will be the last iteration of the iPhone 12 design before complete overhaul in 2023 with the iPhone 15, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has accurately predicted the most recent iPhones, iPads and Macs based on insider information.

Here's what to expect from the iPhone 14, according to the Bloomberg report.

  • There will be four models the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, the 6.1 inch iPhone 14 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max.
  • This means there wil be no iPhone 14 Mini. Instead, the iPhone 14 Max will give consumers the option to get the biggest screen size at a lower cost, absent the "pro" features.
  • The iPhone 14 Max will be $200 (around P10,500) less expensive that the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
  • The main camera on iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max will be bumped up to 48 megapixels while the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will likely retain the 12 megapixel main camera.
  • The notch on the iPhone 14 will be redesigned to a pill-shaped cutout.
  • Apple is working on sattelite connectivity for the iPhone 14 series.

Currently, other differentiators for the Pro vs the Non-pro iphones are a stainless steel frame instead of aluminum, triple cameras, a LIDAr depth sensor, an extra graphics core and slightly longer battery life.

Gurman noted that since the iPhone 6 in 2014, Apple has adopted a three-year lifespan for the main design before a complete overhaul.

Remember the iPhone X in 2017? It got a Max version in 2018 and a Pro Max version 2019 with triple cameras before the iPhone 12 of pandemic year 2020 went retro with flat sides. If that pattern is to be followed, the iPhone 14 of this year will be the last iteration before a completely redesigned model in 2023.

Apple typically announces new iPhones in mid-September and the devices go on sale later in the month in the U.S. with a staggered global rollout that means around Christmas time in the Philippines.
