Japan is reopening its borders, to end one of the world's longest pandemic closures, Digital Minister Kono Taro said on Twitter late Thursday.

The reopening means "visa waiver is back", the daily limit on arrivals is lifted and tourists can enter as individuals instead of packaged tours. Kono did not specify a reopening date, but a Kyodo News report said it would likely happen during the Autumn season, which is around October.

It is important to note that even before the COVID closure, Japan still requires visas for Filipino visitors. There are, however, countries with waived visa requirements such as the U.S.

A check with the Japanese Embassy in Manila early Friday showed the most recent visa advise is still dated Sept. 7. We will keep you posted on updates.
