Malacañang has declared Saturday, July 9 a regular holiday throughout the country to mark Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of the Sacrifice in Islam.
The law mandates that the 10th day of Zhul Hijja, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar, a national holiday for the observance of Eid al-Adha. However, this is a movable date determined by the Muslim lunar calendar, hence the need for the government to specify the date.
The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos recommended to declare July 9, 2022 a national holiday to observe Eid al-adha, according to Proclamation No. 2 issued by Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez.
The Eid al-Adha, one of the two greatest feasts in Islam along with Eid al-Fitr, marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Islam's holiest site.
