Fisherfolk group Pamalakaya trooped to the Chinese Embassy on Friday to protest Beijing's new law that authorizes its coast guard to use force in the West Philippine Sea, where its claims overlap with the Philippines and several others.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. filed a diplomatic protest against the law, calling it a "verbal threat of war".
Giving such powers to the coast guard will make it more dangerous for Filipino fishermen in the West Philippine Sea, said Jay Batongbacal, Director of the Institute for Maritime Affairs and the Law of the Sea at the UP College of Law.
