The first two trainsets for the MRT-7 shipped from South Korea were placed on track in Quezon City, photos from builder San Miguel Corp. showed Sunday.
Each trainset, some still wrapped in plastic, has three cars were dispatched to the MRT-7 tracks between University Avenue and Tandang Sora after clearing customs at the Port of Manila.
Out of the 36 total trainsets ordered from South Korea's Hyundai ROTEM, six trainsets are expected to arrive by the end of 2021. The MRT-7 is expected to have 108 cars.
South Korea’s national rail manufacturer, Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), also served as SMC’s adviser for the project.
Construction is currently 55.3% complete with testing targetted for June 2022, SMC said in an earlier statement. Once operational, the travel via train between Quezon City to San Jose del Monte, Bulacan will only take 35 minutes. The MRT-7 will also link up the MRT-3 and LRT-1, allowing for more seamless travel.
“We are working round-the-clock to meet the first test run by next year. We know that our countrymen are eagerly awaiting the formal opening of the MRT-7 so that they can experience faster, more efficient, and comfortable travel,” SMC President Ramon Ang said.
