Several senators attending the Senate plenary session on Tuesday went offline, much like several parts of Luzon that grappled with a power supply shortage.
The Senate was in the period of interpellation for some key measures when Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri stood up to say that some senators were not able to participate virtually due to the brownouts.
"Apparently there are several areas in Metro Manila that are experiencing brownouts. And some of our colleagues have gone offline because of these brownouts," he said.
"I beg the indulgence of our colleagues, those who are offline and online," he said.
Still, Zubiri said they would continue with their agenda for the day. Those who were lined up to interpellate but could not do so due to the brownout will be allowed to speak later in the session or on the next day.
The chamber is racing to approve as many priority measures as possible before Congress adjourns session on Friday.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said that the Luzon grid would be on red alert, the highest warning, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday. Because of this, rotational brownouts may occur in several areas in Luzon, including parts of Metro Manila.
