The capital city of Manila opened on Monday its first Muslim cemetery, a plan that its mayor Isko Moreno first bared in 2019.
Moreno led the inauguration of the 2.4-hectare cemetery located within the Manila South Cemetery--which is meant for deceased Muslim residents of the city.
"Now they can have a place here in Manila. Salamat sa Diyos nakaraos tayo kahit na may pandemya," he told reporters during the inauguration.

Some P49.3 million was allocated by the Manila city government for the construction of the cemetery, which Moreno described as a fulfillment of a promise he made for Muslim brothers and sisters in the capital.
Moreno first revealed his plans to build the Islamic cemetery in the city during a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the Philippines, Dr. Abdullah Al Bussairy.
