(UPDATE) Flash floods from Severe Tropical Storm Maring (Kompasu) chased thousands of people out of their homes overnight as it headed out of the Philippines on Tuesday, officials said.
Close to 1,000 people were either evacuated or chose to ride out the floods in their houses, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said. Floods were reported in the Mimaropa, Cordillera and Cagayan Valley, where the eye of the storm was closest late on Monday.
The NDRRMC said it was verifying one fatality. The Cagayan provincial disaster office reported 544 families were evacuated.
Maring, the 13th storm of 2021, was spotted 230 kilometers west of Calayan, Cagayan at 7 a.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour and 125 kph gusts. Moving westward, it could exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility Tuesday.
The storm made landfall in Fuga Island in Aparri, Cagayan at 8:10 p.m. Monday, PAGASA said. Torrential rains will persist on Tuesday in Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the Ilocos Region. Moderate to heavy rains are expected in Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac and the rest of Cagayan.
PAGASA warned of possible floodings and landslides in these areas due to rains and possible storm surge brought by Maring especially in low-lying coastal communities in northern Luzon.
Monsoon rains are also possible in Western Visayas, Palawan and Occidental Mindoro until early Wednesday as Maring enhances the habagat, said PAGASA.
