"Liway", an award-winning 2018 film on Martial Law, will start streaming ad-free on YouTube starting March 18 until April, its writer and director Kip Oebanda said Wednesday.
Set during the waning days of former president Ferdinand Marcos' dictatorship, "Liway" is based on Oebanda's own childhood as a young boy named Dakip, who grew up in a prison camp with his mother, the revolutionary Cecilia Flores-Oebanda or Commander Liway of the New People's Army.
Released in August 2018 as an entry to the 14th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, Liway features actress Glaiza de Castro as its titular lead, Kenken Nuyad as Dakip, and Dominic Roco plays his father, Commander Toto.
One of the festival's highest grossing film that year, Liway won the special jury award and the audience choice award in the full-length feature film category, receiving critical praise for its take on one of the darkest periods in Philippine history.
"Huwag nating pabayaan na ang EDSA '86 ay maging Aquino vs Marcos. Ito ay laban ng taong bayan na sawa na sa pagnanakaw, sa patayan, sa gutom at sa kasinungalingan. Ang mga magsasaka, guro, minero, manggagawa at ang mga ordinaryong mamamayan ang tunay na bayani ng EDSA," a post on the film's Facebook page read.
"'Wag tayong maging bulag sa katotohanan na ang minsang nang-abuso at nagnakaw ay hindi nakokontento sa kapangyarihan at kayamanan. Power and money are addictive. You will always want more. Kaya huwag na natin ulitin ang mga pagkakamali ng nakaraan," it added.
