Metro Manila mayors appealed to the national government on Thursday to ease the COVID-19 restrictions for fully vaccinated individuals in a bid to spur economic activity.
Easing COVID-19 protocols for the fully vaccinated would “not only boost employment, industry services, and other economic endeavors but would likewise encourage the rest of the population to have themselves vaccinated," the mayors said in a resolution passed Thursday.
While there is a need to protect public health, the mayors said there is also a need to restore economic activity in the metropolis, which has been severely slowed down by the revival of stricter COVID-19 restrictions due to the hyper-contagious coronavirus Delta variant.
The mayors of the capital region made the appeal after the inter-agency task force on COVID-19 response postponed the implementation of the shift to the more relaxed GCQ with granular lockdowns in Metro Manila--hurting the reopening hopes of several industries such as restaurants.
The capital region remains under MECQ until Sept. 15 which means that dine-in services, religious gatherings, salons, spas, and other personal care services remain prohibited from operating.
