Number coding during the morning rush hour might be implemented in Metro Manila under Alert Level 1 to help ease traffic congestion under the "new normal", the MMDA said Monday.
The MMDA needs three to seven days to observe the traffic in EDSA once Alert Level 1 takes effect on Tuesday to monitor the volume count under the loosest alert level before deciding to add more hours to the number coding scheme, traffic chief Bong Nebrija told TeleRadyo.
"Makikita n'yo po noon, 5-8 (p.m.) ang ni-number coding namin, we’re thinking of, we might be putting one in the morning, mga 7-9 but this will be based on the data that we will be getting once Level 1 comes in," he said.

Nebrija said the MMDA is also open to discussing a whole day number coding scheme based on the data gathered during its observation period.
While vehicle volume in EDSA nears pre-pandemic levels at 384,000, or 21,000 cars short of the 405,000 vehicles pre-COVID, EDSA's configuration has changed with the dedicated bus lane, he added.
"EDSA has already transformed and with that we might be implementing policies that will be responding to its current set-up," he said.
