Twelve people were hurt after a Philippine Airlines flight from Los Angeles encountered severe turbulence two hours before landing in Manila, the flag carrier said late Monday.

One of the injured remains in the hospital for treatment. The 12 include nine passengers and three crew members. Philippine Airlines will shoulder all medical expenses, the carrier's spokeswoman, Cielo Villaluna said.

Flight PR113 touched down at Manila airport at 10:30 p.m. Sunday after a stopover in Honolulu. PAL said the turbulence was not detectable on the jet's radar.

During severe turbulence, the altitude and speed of the aircraft changes abruptly. Items fall or lift off the floor, loose items are tossed about, it's impossible to walk and passengers are forced violently against their seatbelts, according to planemaker Airbus.

"We are in the process of reaching out to the affected passengers and coordinating passenger wellness... We affirm that safety is our top priority and that Philippine Airlines is fully cooperating with the concerned airport and aviation authorities," Villaluna said.
