Pantone on Thursday unveiled its choice for 2022 color of the year: Very Peri, a dynamic periwinkle blue with a vibrant violet-red undertone, that was specifically created for the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Very Peri is the first color of the year created for the said purpose since Pantone started choosing a color of the year in the program's 22-year history, reflecting "the global innovation and transformation taking place."

"As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us," Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute said.

Very Peri (PANTONE 17-3938 )"blends the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red," and is "the happiest and warmest of all the blue hues" according to the color matching service used in fashion and interior design.

Pantone said it aims for Very Peri to help people "embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we re-write our lives."

" We are living in transformative times. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing," Pantone said.

"Rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light," it added.

In 2021, the year of the COVID-19 vaccine, Pantone chose two colors: Ultimate Gray (PANTONE 17-5104) and Illuminating (PANTONE 13-0647) for its color of the year, depicting "practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic."
