The woman, who was pregnant when she tested positive for the coronavirus on July 22, was set to give birth late July, Usec. Maria Rosario Vergeire told TeleRadyo. The patient was asymptomatic.

"Ngayon lang ho natin nalaman na ito ay Lambda variant," she said. Contact-tracing is ongoing.

Vergeire said the woman couldn't transmit the coronavirus to the baby from the womb.

"Ang pagbubuntis po, 'yung virus hindi siya nagko-cross ng placental barrier, ibig sabihin hindi n'ya po mata-transmit habang siya ay buntis."

The Lambda variant, first identified in Peru in December 2020, is a variant of interest comparable to the Delta variant in terms of transmissibility.

"Base po sa analysis natin, tiningnan natin ang mga datos across the countries na apektado nito, hindi naman ito mas kumakalat compared to the Delta variant," she said.
