The Philippines on Saturday received more than 1 million additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines as the government fast tracks immunization efforts to achieve herd immunity by early next year.
The latest shipment includes 961,000 doses of Moderna vaccine, of which 712,800 doses were procured by the government while 248,200 were purchased by the private sector. A total of 190,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccines also arrived.
The government has raised the immunization target up to 98 million, or 90% of the 109 million Philippine population by early 2022. As of Sept. 16, over 17 million individuals have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
On Sunday, another shipment of more than 5 million COVID-19 vaccines are expected to arrive in the country, of which 3 million are government-procured Sinovac doses and 2,020,590 are Pfizer jabs from the COVAX facility.
