RuPaul surprised Filipino fans at midnight on Monday, opening auditions for Drag Race Philippines Season 1, which will go head-to-head with a similar reality show hosted by the U.S. edition's well-loved almuna, Manila Luzon.
Twitter was bursting with memes of Drag Race Philippines and Luzon's Drag Den. It's a lipsync for your legacy where there can be only one winner. Ever the queen of nice, Luzon tweeted after RuPaul's announcement that two drag competitions for Filipina drag queens happening at the same time would be "MAJOR".
RuPaul, who brought drag culture to the mainstream, is looking for the Philippines' "first drag superstar" with "charisma, uniqueness, talent and nerve". Drag Race Philippines is the latest international spinoff after Spain, the UK, Down Under (Australia and New Zealand) and Thailand, among others.
Luzon was the runner-up in Season 2 of Drag Race U.S. and starred in two All Stars editions. She also appeared in the current All Stars season as a lipsync assassin. Other drag queens of Filipina ancestry who appeared in the U.S. season include Ongina, Vivienne Pinay and Jiggly Caliente.
Both Drag Race Philippines and Drag Den will be available on streaming.
Emmy Award-winning RuPaul's Drag Race is currently on its 13th regular season and sixth All Stars season in the U.S., one of the longest-running reality competition shows in America.
The quarantine streaming staple is available in the Philippines via Netflix and WOW Plus.
