Despite leading in pre-election surveys for president, Sara Duterte-Carpio has opted to seek reelection as Davao City mayor, her spokesperson Liloan, Cebu Mayor Christina Frasco said Thursday.
"According to Mayor Sara, she will run for reelection as Davao City mayor," Frasco told reportr in a text message.
"Incumbent Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte will run for reelection," she added.
Duterte-Carpio's plan to seek reelection came after she announced that she would no longer run for president in the 2022 elections to give way to her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, who is vying for the vice presidency.
The younger Duterte said they agreed that only one between her and her father would run for a national position next year.
Should she push through with her plan to seek reelection and win, it would be Duterte-Carpio's last term as Davao City mayor. She has served as the city's chief executive since 2016. Sebastian will be on his second term as vice mayor should he win.
Duterte-Carpio led the list of preferred presidential candidates for the 2022 elections according to the June 2021 Pulse Asia survey. She previously said she was open to running for president.
A citizen's movement called Hugpong Para Kay Sara, composed of around 10,000 members, was recently launched to convince the Davao City mayor to run for president next year.
