A major section of the road connecting the North and South Luzon Expressways will be completed by the fourth quarter of 2021, cutting travel time for motorists crossing the capital region, Public Works Sec. Mark Villar said.
The first section is 35% complete and will run for five kilometers. It is located between the Caloocan and España Interchanges.
"Ito po ay nine kilometers long at pag natapos po ito, ang travel time from NLEX to SLEX ay magiging 20 minutes na lang," Villar said. At present, it takes two hours to travel between NLEX and SLEX.
The P23 billion elevated expressway section can also handle heavier vehicles like trucks, Villar added.
The next elevated section which runs for three kilometers will be ready for construction by June 2021. It will be located between the España Interchange and the vicinity of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
Full opening of the entire NLEX-SLEX Connector is targetted for 2022.
