The Philippines on Friday logged 20,336 more COVID-19 cases as it pilots an alert-based quarantine system until the end of September.

This brought total active cases to 188,108, and the cumulative total since the pandemic started to 2,324,475. There were 301 deaths and 10,028 new recoveries bringing the running totals to 36,328 and 2,100,039.

Metro Manila is piloting an alert level system with localized lockdowns until Sept. 30. All cities and one municipality in the capital region are classified as Alert Level 4, the second strictest under a five-step system.

Mayors can place specific streets or barangays under lockdown depending on number of cases.
