Three Earthquakes Hit Surigao Del Norte Town

Plus, how to keep safe from earthquakes.

(UPDATE) Three earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 4.4 to 5.1 jolted a Surigao Del Norte town before Sunday noon, Phivolcs said.

The first earthquake, with a Magnitude of 4.9, struck east of Burgos town at 10:59 a.m., with a depth of nine kilometers.

The stronger quake, with a Magnitude of 5.1, came only around 21 minutes later at 11:20 a.m., also with a depth of nine kilometers.

Here are the reported intensities in both earthquakes:

Intensity IV - Moderately Strong: Felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors:

  • Burgos, Surigao del Norte
  • Sta. Monica, Surigao del Norte

Intensity III - Weak: Felt by many people indoors especially on upper floors of buildings:

  • Dapa, Surigao Del Norte
  • San Isidro, Surigao Del Norte
  • General Luna, Surigao Del Norte

Intensity II - Slightly Felt: Felt by few individuals at rest indoors. Hanging objects swing slightly

  • Hinunangan, Southern Leyte
  • Silago, Southern Leyte
  • Surigao City, Surigao Del Norte
  • Socorro, Surigao Del Norte

A third quake, which also struck east of Burgos, Surigao Del Norte, occurred 20 minutes after the second one at 11:40 a.m. It had a Magnitude of 4.4 and depth of 12 kilometers.

Phivolcs said there was no expected damage from the three earthquakes.
