Former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV on Monday said he was ready to shelve his political comeback in the 2022 elections to support the presidential candidacy of Vice President Leni Robredo.

Trillanes, who is part of the pool of nominees of 1Sambayan opposition coalition for the two highest government positions for next year's polls, said his candidacy would depend on Robredo's decision. The vice president herself is also among the coalition's nominees.

"On the assumption that she (Robredo) gets picked as the presidential nominee of 1Sambayan, then it is her prerogative to choose her running mate," Trillanes said in a CNN Philippines interview.

"I'm prepared not to run at all and just push for her candidacy. But if she would tap me as her running mate then I'd be ready for it," he added.

Trillanes said rallying behind the selected nominees of 1Sambayan was the only way the opposition could win in the 2022 elections.

"When we subjected ourselves to this process, that is part of it. Even if it doesn't go your way, then kailangan maging team player ka," he added.

Trillanes said he considered it a "big honor" to be included in 1Sambayan's list of nominees, adding that it is the "primary and sole vehicle" for the opposition's victory in next year's elections.

Robredo earlier said she remained open to running for president despite the claims of former Camarines Sur Rep. Rolando Andaya that the vice president was running for governor of the province next year.

Aside from Trillanes and Robredo, also nominated by 1Sambayan are Sen. Grace Poe, CIBAC party-list Rep. Bro. Eddie Villanueva, Atty. Chel Diokno, and Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto.
