Twitter is testing a "thumbs down" button on iOS, it said on Thursday. Does this mean users can start "disliking" tweets on the platform?
If you ask Twitter, it is not a dislike button and it's an experiment for now.
"We're testing this to understand the types of replies you find relevant in a convo, so we can work on ways to show more of them," the micro-blogging platform said.
iOS users who are part of the experiment can see two versions: either thumbs up and down buttons or up and down vote buttons, similar to how Reddit does it. Reddit noticed and responded with a meme.
For the experiment, downvoted replies are visible only to the user, while replies which will get upvotes will be shown as "likes".
Twitter said the votes wouldn't change the order of replies.
Cody Elam, a user researcher on Twitter, said the experiment would give users the power over the quality of replies they want without publicly shaming others. It can also fix how the best replies can surface quickly.
"As a researcher, this experiment is a great opportunity to learn about the ways that we can improve conversation ranking on Twitter," he said.
