Whether or not President Rodrigo Duterte will run for vice president is up to God, Malacanang said Thursday, as allies float the possibility of the chief executive seeking the second highest office in 2022.
Duterte's PDP Laban party earlier adopted a resolution urging him to run for vice president for the sake of continuity. He had also served as vice mayor of Davao City when term limits prevented him from reelection. As president, he is also ineligible for reelection.
On Thursday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque was asked if the president was seriously considering running for vice president, to which he answered: "I think I would quote the president, he leaves it to God."
A Feb. 22 to March 3 Pulse Asia survey showed Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio as the number one choice for president in the 2022 elections. Duterte-Carpio served as mayor when her father was vice mayor.
