Ateneo's Fr. Roque Ferriols Passes Away

Fr. Roque Ferriols SJ of the Ateneo De Manila University, who promoted the teaching of philosophy in Filipino, died on Sunday at the age of 96, school authorities said.

The Jesuit priest died early in the morning, on the eve of day his 97th birthday, Ateneo said without mentioning the reason for his passing.

Known as Padre Roque among Ateneo students, Ferriols taught philosophy in the university for more than 40 years and served as chair of the Department of Philosophy.

The university describes his brand of philosophy as a return to "'the things themselves,' to lived experiences that become the trigger for philosophical reflection."

During Ferriol's time as head of the philosophy department, the AB Philosophy program of the university was established.

He also authored and translated several books on philosophy to Filipino, including "Mga Sinaunang Griyego", "Magpakatao", "Pambungad sa Metapisika" and "Pilosopiya ng Relihiyon" --- all of which earned him the Book Awards from the Manila Critics' Circle.
