Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, Quarantine Implementer, is Next PNP Chief

(UPDATE) President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed  Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, enforcer of long-running community quarantines in the country, as the next chief of the Philippine National Police, the Department of the Interior and Local Government said Wednesday.

Eleazar succeeds Police Gen. Debold Sinas who retires on Saturday, May 8, DILG Sec. Eduardo Año said. He is the sixth to be appointed at the helm of the police force under the Duterte administration.

"Through a NAPOLCOM (National Police Commission) resolution, Eleazar was recommended to be the next Chief PNP based on seniority, merit, service reputation and competence to lead the Police Force," Año said.

Like Sinas, Eleazar is also a member of the Philippine Military Academy Hinirang Class of 1987. Among his stints at the PNP are serving as deputy chief for administration, Metro Manila Police chief, and Quezon City Police District chief.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Philippines, Eleazar led the Joint Task Force COVID Shield, which was tasked to ensure the implementation of COVID-19 protocols in the country.

Eleazar will serve at the helm of the PNP until November this year as he is set to reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 on Nov. 13.
